Riding Lessons

Lessons focus on developing good horsemanship skills, as well as improving riding skills. Classes are available to adults and children age seven and up.

Lesson Requirements

New students are asked to attend an orientation session to learn how to work safely around the horses and get ready to ride. You'll learn your way around the stables and how to properly lead, groom and tack a horse. Orientation class can be arranged as an addition to your first lesson or scheduled prior to the first lesson. Note: There is no expectation for students under 8 to be able to groom and tack on their own. The instructor will get the horse ready for the lesson or assist the student as appropriate.

Equipment Required

To ensure the safety of the student, the following equipment is required to be worn during all lessons:

  • Helmets are required for all riders at all times when mounted.

  • Appropriate riding boots with a heel are required while riding.

  • The Instructor

PLEASE NOTE that the minimum age for lessons is 7. Riding requires a high-degree of coordination, balance and concentration--young children often lack the body control needed to properly cue the horse. Lessons for children under 8 focus on learning to balance and steer at the walk. As their balance and coordination improves, they will begin to ride more independantly. Once a student is comfortable at the walk and able to steer and stop on their own, they may begin working at the corto and largo. Lessons for children under 8 are walk-only.
